ESL Idioms and Worksheets (Printable PDF)
Common English Idioms with Meanings and Examples
The ESL Idioms and Worksheets book contains over 400 common idioms and phrases for English language learners. This collection of idiomatic expressions is divided into ten unique themes to facilitate the learning process by grouping the vocabulary into manageable sections. The themes include idioms relating to animals, clothing, colors, food, love, money, sports, and more.
Idioms Lists with Meanings and Examples
At the start of each thematic chapter of the PDF workbook, students get a complete summary of idioms with definitions and example sentences. These examples help students understand how the expressions are used in context and improve their general understanding of the terms.
Students should try to use the idiom lists as a starting point for learning the new vocabulary and as a reference to reflect upon. After reviewing the meanings and examples, students apply what they have studied using the worksheets provided after each idiom list.
Idiom Worksheets
The worksheets allow students to practice writing the definitions of each idiom and create sentences with the expressions. Using the worksheets, students complete other tasks, such as underlining idioms in sentences and writing the correct meanings.
Additional activities for each theme encourage students to recall the idioms to match the definitions. Finally, the last worksheet in each category gives students time to create more sentences using vocabulary they had difficulty with in the previous exercises.
Idiom Crosswords
To review the expressions further, students can complete challenging crossword puzzles using idioms from the worksheet activities. The end of each chapter features crossword clues and answer keys.
